Qrion, born in 1994 in Sapporo, Japan, residing in San Francisco, 27 years old, is rolling up the EDM scene from behind for quite some time now. She began producing her own sounds while she was still in the high school in Sapporo, taking inspiration from all the environments that are accessible to her. She uses the sounds of the world around her to create a distinct, supremely atmospheric sound supported by energetic beats and lush multi-layered synth textures.

Beginning in 2013, her work initially appeared on various labels until 2019, when she was launching her impressive career with Anjunadeep. In addition to her impressive original productions, Qrion also has a knack for creating outstanding remixes. She has been extremely successful in lending her forward-thinking sound to acts such as Alina Baraz, Lane 8, Catching Flies, TOKiMONSTA and more.

About the album:

On October 29, 2021, Qrion released her debut album „I Hope It Lasts Forever“ on Anjunadeep. She took advantage of her time in lockdown to put together an album that incorporates many childhood memories of home in Sapporo and the feelings that marked the time she moved from Sapporo to San Francisco. „I connected with my old memories – the feelings of spending time with my father, the time I spent with my family in Japan, and the small but important moments from my life in Sapporo,“ Qrion says about her debut album.

The album packs a heavy punch and is impressively showing off Qrion’s arranging skills. „I Hope It Lasts Forever“ is an exceedingly exciting acoustic journey through the various house subgenres. The piano passages and arrangements in „Proud“ and „Your Love“ are an open commitment to classic house sounds and remind a bit to the production style of LP Giobbi. Now this closeness is not surprising, as Qrion and LP Giobbi have been performing in a row at many festivals in the US lately.

Certainly you can hear some acoustic parallels to Marsh or to the sounds on Lane8’s „This Never Happened“ imprint. Qrion is like a little sponge and adapts the many different sound patterns she encounters with sharp ears and creates her own, unmistakable sound worlds of outstanding beauty.

It is incredibly difficult to highlight tracks on this exceptional album, because here there is not one weak piece, Qrion is very skillfully placing the individual tracks on the album and thus creates an immensely fascinating arc of tension with an incredible density. Just listen to „11-11“ as an example or also the hypnotically pulsating „Waterfalls“, also „Proud“ as an almost classic house track is able to please exceedingly.

The Bottom Line:

With „I Hope It Lasts Forever“ Qrion has presented a fantastic album, which is without a doubt one of the best releases of 2021 in the field of Electronica, and for me it is the album of the year in the Electronic Dance Music segment. With smooth, exquisite beats to dreamy, graceful ambient set pieces to dancefloor numbers in a 90’s guise, Qrion is covering an enormously wide spectrum on this work. Listening to this album, there is not even the slightest hint of boredom, it is boundless fun to explore an album, which does not show any signs of wear and tear even after multiple listens over the entire running time of 67 minutes.

Qrion, geboren 1994 in Sapporo, Japan, mit Wohnsitz in San Francisco, 27 Jahre alt, ist seit geraumer Zeit dabei, die EDM-Szene von hinten her aufzurollen. Bereits in der Highschool in Sapporo begann sie mit der Produktion ihrer eigenen Sounds und lässt sich von allen Umgebungen inspirieren, die ihr zugänglich sind. Die Geräusche der Welt um sie herum nutzt sie dazu, um einen eigenständigen, überaus stimmungsvollen Sound zu kreieren, der von energiegeladenen Beats und üppigen mehrschichtigen Synthie-Texturen getragen wird.

Ab 2013 erscheinen ihre Werke zunächst auf verschiedenen Labels, bis sie 2019 ihr beeindruckende Karriere bei Anjunadeep startet. Neben ihren beeindruckenden Eigenproduktionen hat Qrion auch ein Händchen für hervorragende Remixe. Sie hat ihren zukunftsweisenden Sound Acts wie Alina Baraz, Lane 8, Catching Flies, TOKiMONSTA und anderen überaus erfolgreich zur Verfügung gestellt.

Am 29. Oktober 2021 veröffentlichte Qrion ihr Debut-Album „I Hope It Lasts Forever“ bei Anjunadeep. Sie hat die Zeit im Lockdown genutzt und ein Album zusammengestellt, in dem sie viele Kindheitserinnerungen an die Heimat in Sapporo und die Gefühle verarbeitet hat, die die Zeit ihres Umzugs von Sapporo nach San Francisco geprägt haben. „Ich habe mich mit meinen alten Erinnerungen verbunden – mit den Gefühlen, Zeit mit meinem Vater zu verbringen, mit der Zeit, die ich mit meiner Familie in Japan verbracht habe, und mit den kleinen, aber wichtigen Momenten aus meinem Leben in Sapporo,“ sagt Qrion zu ihrem Debut-Album.

Das Album hat es schwer in sich und zeigt eindrucksvoll Qrions Arrangement-Finesse. „I Hope It Lasts Forever“ ist eine überaus spannende akustische Reise durch die verschiedenen House Subgenres. Die Piano-Passagen und Arrangements in „Proud“ und „Your Love“ sind ein offenes Bekenntnis zu klassischen House Sounds und erinnern ein wenig an die Produktionsart von LP Giobbi. Diese Nähe ist nun auch nicht weiter verwunderlich, denn Qrion und LP Giobbi sind in der letzten Zeit auf vielen Festivals in den USA aufgetreten.

Sicherlich sind hier und da auch einige akustische Parallelen zu Marsh oder auch zu den Sounds auf Lane8s „This Never Happened“-Imprint herauszuhören. Qrion ist nun mal wie ein Schwamm und adaptierte die vielen unterschiedlichen Klangmuster auf die sie mit gespitzten Ohren trifft und modelliert daraus jedoch sehr eigene, unverwechselbar Klangwelten von vollendeter Schönheit.

Es fällt ungemein schwer, auf diesem Ausnahmealbum Tracks herauszuheben, denn es gibt hier nicht ein einziges schwaches Stück, sehr gekonnt platziert Qrion die einzelnen Tracks auf dem Album und erzeugt so einen immens faszinierenden Spannungsbogen mit einer unglaublichen Dichte. Hört Euch einfach mal als Beispiel „11-11“ oder auch das hypnotisch pulsierende „Waterfalls“ an, auch „Proud“ als beinahe klassischer House-Track vermag überaus zu gefallen.

The Bottom Line:

Mit „I Hope It Lasts Forever“ hat Qrion ein fantastisches Album abgeliefert, das ohne Zweifel zu den besten Veröffentlichungen des Jahres 2021 im Bereich Electronica gehört, für mich ist es das Album des Jahres im Segment Electronic Dance Music. Mit sanften, exquisiten Beats über verträumt anmutige Ambient-Versatzstücke bis hin zu Dancefloor-Nummern im 90er Gewand deckt Qrion auf diesem Werk ein enorm breites Spektrum ab. Beim Hören dieses Albums stellt sich nicht mal die leiseste Andeutung von Langeweile ein, es macht unbändigen Spaß ein Album zu erkunden, bei dem sich auch nach mehrfachem Hören über die gesamte Laufzeit von 67 Minuten keinerlei Abnutzungserscheinungen einstellen.

Das Anjunadeep Album liegt im Lossless-Format mit 16 Bit / 44.1 kHz vor (CD-Qualität) und klingt über den gesamten Frequenzbereich ausgezeichnet.
