New Order: Substance (1987)

New Order: Substance – Album (1987

Since their incredibly good album “Substance” from 1987, New Order for me have been one of the undisputed, very high up in the hierarchy standing sanctuaries of modern pop culture. Before Substance came out, I had been a constant seeker since 1976 and felt nowhere at home musically. So when the album came out and I had bought and listened to it, it was an unbelievably good feeling, “finally arrived at home,” it popped into my head.

News Order

New Order, the band that emerged from Joy Division’s legacy in the early ’80s, is symbolic for one of the first truly successful combinations of rock’n’roll and dance music.
The Manchester-based punk band, even among the darkest of its era, transformed itself into a dance-floor master and wrote the perfect soundtrack to the peevish Britain of the Thatcher era. Substance has been released in the summer of 1987 by Factory and contains all singles, including B-sides like Blue Monday, Ceremony, Confusion, The Perfect Kiss or Bizarre Love Triangle.

That is certainly the golden age of the quartet consisting of Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris. Nevertheless, in spite of some highlights ( as for example the Technique album in 1989), in terms of composition, New Order should never seriously reach this level again…
