Mit hypnotischen modularen Soundscapes und avantgardistischen analogen Experimenten hat das argentinische Trio FORMA, bestehend aus Juan Hansen, Pablo Bursztyn und Rocio Giorgi, frischen Wind in die Welt der Vocal Electronica gebracht. Nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer von der Kritik hochgelobten Hollow EP im Juli 2021 und einer fesselnden Live-Performance auf dem MUTEK Festival, kehren sie nun mit der umwerfenden neuen EP "THE PEAK" zum Berliner Label MEIOSIS zurück. Der Titeltrack der EP wurde bereits vor der offiziellen Veröffentlichung für die neue Staffel der US-Fernsehserie "Power Book" ausgewählt und hat sich zu einer heiß begehrten Kollaboration entwickelt, die bereits ein Millionenpublikum begeistert hat.
The Tracks:
Die drei Tracks, allesamt perfekt und faszinierend umgesetzt, begeistern mit einer immensen Bandbreite, geprägt von überaus melodischen, leicht schwermütigen Kompositionen, die Erinnerungen an musikalische Referenzen wie die legendäreren Syntax oder auch Blaze aus Frankreich wecken. Obwohl sie eine relativ neue Stimme in der elektronischen Live-Szene sind, setzen sie hier bereits nachhaltige Akzente.
Die EP beginnt mit dem Titeltrack "THE PEAK", der durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichneten Marley Waters glänzt, der sich durch seine umfangreiche Arbeit als Songwriter, Produzent, Sänger, Rapper und DJ in den USA und darüber hinaus einen Namen gemacht hat. Zu seinen größten Erfolgen zählen die Tracks On to You [Remix] (2015), Share My Last (2016), Wine Pon It (2017) und, vielleicht am bemerkenswertesten, die Kreation von Tinashe's 2 On an der Seite von DJ Mustard.
Der Titeltrack THE PEAK ist ein düsteres Meisterwerk, bei dem sich Waters' unverwechselbare Stimme auf einem pulsierenden, nach vorne gehenden Beat mit einer markanten Bassline und verhaltenen, düsteren elektronischen Klanglandschaften ausbreiten darf.

Der zweite Track, ON THE PAST, diffundiert osmotisch sehr geschickt zwischen einer traditionellen Instrumentalisierung und House- und Techno-Soundlinien hin und her.
HAZE, der dritte Track, der die EP abschließt, unterscheidet sich stilistisch von seinen Vorgängern und kommt mit verträumten Singer/Songwriter-Vocals, Downtempo-Rhythmen und meditativen Harmonien in allerbester Deep-House-Manier daher. Das Arrangement des Tracks zeichnet sich durch einen indiegefärbten Farbfilter aus, der eine überaus emotionale Komposition schafft, mit Signallichtern, die in neue Richtungen der elektronischen Musik weisen.
Unterm Strich
FORMAs Kompositionen sind fast schon zurückhaltend und behutsam gestaltet und bieten einen faszinierend vielschichtigen Klangteppich mit Gänsehautpotenzial. Der Weniger-ist-Mehr-Ansatz verleiht FORMA einen immens hohen Wiedererkennungswert, der eindeutig Lust auf mehr macht.
Die EP liegt mit 24 Bit / 48 kHz im High-res Format vor und klingt über das gesamte Frequenzspektrum absolut makellos.

With hypnotic modular soundscapes and avant-garde analog experimentation, Argentine trio FORMA of Juan Hansen, Pablo Bursztyn and Rocio Giorgi have brought a breath of fresh air to the world of vocal electronica. After the release of their critically acclaimed Hollow EP in July 2021 and a captivating live performance at MUTEK Festival, they are now returning to the Berlin-based label MEIOSIS with the stunning new EP „THE PEAK“. The EP’s title track was selected for the new season of the US television series „Power Book“ even before its official release, and has become a highly sought-after collaboration that has already delighted the ears of millions.

The Tracks:
The three tracks, all perfectly and intriguingly realized, are inspiring with an immense range, characterized by exceedingly melodic slightly mournful compositions, evoking memories of musical references such as the more legendary Syntax or even Blaze from France. Although they are a relatively new voice in the electronic live scene, they are already setting lasting landmarks here.
The EP ist starting with the title track „THE PEAK,“ which sparkles with a collaboration with multi-platinum award-winning Marley Waters, whose extensive work as a songwriter, producer, singer, rapper and DJ has earned him a high reputation in the United States and beyond. His biggest successes include the tracks On to You [Remix] (2015), Share My Last (2016), Wine Pon It (2017) and, perhaps most notably, the creation of Tinashe’s 2 On alongside DJ Mustard.
The title track, THE PEAK, is a somber masterpiece, with Waters‘ distinctive voice allowed to sprawl on the throbbing, forward-stepping beat with a prominent bassline and restrained gloomy electronic soundscapes.
The second track, ON THE PAST, osmotically diffuses back and forth very deftly between a traditional instrumentalization and house and techno synth sound lines.
HAZE, the third track that closes the EP, differs stylistically from its predecessors and comes with dreamy singer/songwriter vocals, downtempo rhythms and meditative harmonies in the very best deep house manner. The track’s arrangement is characterized by an indie-colored color filter, creating an exceedingly emotional composition, with signal lights that point to new directions in electronic music.
The Bottom Line:
FORMA’s compositions are almost restrained and cautiously designed and offer a fascinating multi-layered sound carpet with goosebump potential. The less-is-more approach gives FORMA an immensely high recognition value, which clearly makes you want more.
