GusGus: Lies Are More Flexible (album) – 2018

GusGus: Lies Are More Flexible (Album) – 2018 + Remixes Are More Flexible 1 + 2 + Arabian Horse (Album, 2011)

Genre: Electronic Dance Music (EDM)

So – and as of today, I declare the GusGus Festival Weeks officially opened. Because until the end of May you can expect a lot in terms of GusGus – infinitely much. I promise you, there will be something exciting for your eyes and ears.
Mit den Reviews zu den Alben „Arabian Horse“ und „Lies Are More Flexible“ sowie den zugehörigen Remix-Alben „Remixes are More Flexible Pt. 1 und Pt. 2“ will ich Euch heute die Zeit etwas verkürzen bis die neuen oben genannten Releases veröffentlicht worden sind – und Euch damit auf die neuen Sachen von GusGus neugierig machen.

At the end of this month – on April 30th, the 5-track EP „Love is Alone“ will be released, which will also contain some breathtaking remixes of the already published and well-known tracks from the new album „Mobil Home“. The mentioned new album „Mobil Home“ will follow at the end of May and last but not least, GusGus will surprise you with a tangible sensation only a little later.

GusGus – Arabian Horse

GusGus can’t be easily packed into a certain pigeonhole, their compositions are much too multilayered and genre-crossing for that. The collective once described their sound as techno/soul, which may be correct for the album „Arabian Horse“from 2011. „GusGus, Techno-Soul as hot as a volcano“, as the Hamburger Abendblatt had titled very significantly in 2011.

With this great album, GusGus finally got me on their side in the end – and it took me a long time before I could justifiably say so. Since 1995 the band has released 10 albums up to the present day in constantly changing formations. Surely I knew GusGus since 1995, but before „Arabian Horse“ GusGus had not really caught fire with me.

But with the album „Arabian Horse“ and the track of the same name, this was to change in a flash in 2011. For me, the track „Arabian Horse „with its driving, post-technoid beat and the magical hypnotic vocal lines of Daníel Ágúst is still one of the best songs GusGus have ever written.
The whole album is hot, very very hot and perfect to dance to without having to be stuffed into any house drawers. It is hot and glowing, like lava that pours out from the chimney of the Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland in the dark of night.

In 2018, the electronic gurus from Iceland released „Lies Are More Flexible“, a sensationally breathtaking album that set standards in electronic dance music and is surrounded by a completely different aura compared to the album „Arabian Horse“, for example.

GusGus – Lies Are More Flexible

It’s extremely difficult to pick a track out of the album and introduce it to you separately. The album „Lies Are More Flexible“ is immensely cohesive and homogeneous – each track is unique and outstanding in its own way. Yes, the opener „Featherlight“ could perhaps be picked out, because this track is floating almost as light as a feather above the multidimensional electronically wavering soundscapes that GusGus have created here immensely fascinating with their modular synths. This is then augmented by a pounding, driving beat and the magical vocals of Daníel Ágúst.

Also the track „No Manual“ has an incredible magical quality – close your eyes and you will float in your mind’s eye through the twilight over the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland to the next Aurora Borealis.
For me, the hypnotic „Fuel“ with its overlapping electronic soundscapes is one of the great moments of contemporary electronic music – yes, I admit, I am a completely convinced fan of the band. Iceland rules!

With the two remix releases „Remixes are More Flexible Pt. 1 and Pt. 2“, GusGus get to the heart of the subject of the album „Lies Are More Flexible“ and surround these tracks from the album with another, new one Aura. When remixes are really well done, they are of course excellent for being danced to.

But a very good remix does a lot more than that. Thomas Lemmer summed this up pretty well in connection with his EP “ Ambient Night Remixed „, which was recently released on Sine Music : „It’s amazing how different the remixes sound when you compare them with the originals: the handwriting and the producers‘ production style asserts itself very intensively with the remixes „- and yet the affiliation to the respective artist universe is perfectly preserved, I want to add here.
And all this applies especially to the two remix albums of GusGus, which also contain a few new and extremely fascinating tracks like „Unfolder“ or „Out of Place“.

Here you can listen to the two releases „Remixes are More Flexible Pt. 1 and Pt. 2“ (you can buy Qobuz, for example, partly also in Hi-Res).
