Hier ist es nun, mein neuestes Playlist-Projekt :
Early Steps in Electronic Music – 1970 – 1980 – 1990

Ich habe diese Projekt eigentlich schon seit geraumer Zeit in der Planung, doch immer wieder kam die Frage auf, wass denn nun die diese Playlist reingehört und was nicht. So hatte ich anfangs relativ viel Tracks aus dem ArtRock/ProgRock Bereich mit dabei, so z. B. von King Crimson, UK oder auch Marillion, die ich doch letztendlich raus genommen habe, da sie nicht zu diesem Konzept passten. Ebenso erging es mir auch mit Sugarhill Gang, Herbie Hancok oder auch Tricky (alls aus den USA) aus dem Rap/HipHop Bereich, auch das passte letztendlich nicht zum Konzept für die Playlist, obwohl ich das Zeugs heute noch unglaublich mag.

Und so blieben am Ende nur zwei, eigentlich drei, Bereiche übrig: zum einen eben die ganz frühen Einflüsse aus den 70igern, vornehmlich deutsche Bands wie Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, NEU! oder auch Michael Rother.

Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist natürlich der unglaubliche Brian Eno, der ehemalige Keyboarder von Roxy Music, der bis zum heutigen Tage unzählige Acts nicht nur aus dem Bereich Electronic beeinflusst hat. Ich habe euch hier zum einen sehr frühe Tracks aus den frühen Alben von Brian Eno zusammengestellt. Zum anderen auch ein paar Sachen, die er mit der gigantisch guten Band 801 zusammen mit dem Gitarristen Phil Manzanera von Roxy Music aufgenommen hat. Zwar nicht unbedingt so bekannt, aber trotzdem massiv stilprägend.

Der dritte Bereich dieser Playlist gehört den Synth Pop Bands und Acts aus UK, die in den 80ern mit ihren faszinierenden Sound, der in weiten Teilen auch extrem gut tanzbar war, den ganzen Planeten mit einer riesigen Welle unglaublich guter Musik überschwemmt hatten. Nehmen wir Namen wie Gary Numan, Tubeway Army, Ultravox. OMD, The Art of Noise, die frühen Depeche Mode und natürlich Franke Goes to Hollywood, aber auch Gruftiges wie The Cure & Co.

Und so wird mit dieser Playlist auch endlich klar, weshalb ich mit dem ganzen Ambient-Zeugs eigentlich niemals viel am Hut hatte, für mich musste es immer entweder progressiv/avantgardistisch oder eben punkig und eben auch tanzbar sein.

Aber natürlich ist auch diese Playlist nicht vollständig: so fehlt beispielsweise der gesamt Dark Wave Bereich fast vollständig, doch das ist etwas für eine eigenständige Playlist zu diesem Thema.

I have this project actually for some time in the planning, but again and again the question came up, what now the playlist reingehört and what not. So I had initially relatively much tracks from the ArtRock / ProgRock area with it, so for example of King Crimson, UK or Marillion, which I have taken out but finally, because they did not fit this concept. Likewise it happened to me also with Sugarhill Gang, Herbie Hancok or also Tricky (alls from the USA) from the Rap/HipHop range, that also did not fit finally to the concept for the Playlist, although I like the stuff still today incredibly.

And so in the end only two, actually three, areas remained: on the one hand the very early influences from the 70s, mainly German bands like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, NEU! or Michael Rother.

Another focus is of course the incredible Brian Eno, the former keyboardist of Roxy Music, who has influenced countless acts not only in the field of electronic music. I’ve put together some very early tracks from Brian Eno’s early albums, as well as some stuff he recorded with the gigantic band 801 together with guitarist Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music. Not necessarily that well-known, but nevertheless massively style-defining.

The third section of this playlist belongs to the synth pop bands and acts from the UK, which in the 80s with their fascinating sound, which was in large parts also extremely danceable, flooded the whole planet with a huge wave of incredibly good music: take names like Gary Numan, Tubeway Army, Ultravox. OMD, The Art of Noise, early Depeche Mode and of course Franke Goes to Hollywood, but also gothic stuff like The Cure & Co.

And so with this playlist it finally becomes clear why I never had much to do with all that ambient stuff, for me it always had to be either progressive/avant-garde or punky and of course also danceable.

But of course this playlist is not complete either: for example the whole Dark Wave area is missing almost completely, but that’s something for a separate playlist on this topic.
